Duce Staley, Crust-Buster of the Month - A Lot of Heart, A Lot of Character both On and Off the Field.

“Duce Staley has been an inspiration to me and many people, as he's a fighter that doesn't give up for a good cause. Besides overcoming many personal and professional hurdles in his life, he has helped countless underprivileged children with The Duce Staley Foundation and many other charities. I am truly proud to welcome Duce Staley to our network as he is a positive influence in many people's lives and understands getting rid of negative obstacles to go forward in a positive direction as Pat Baccili will discuss with her "Crust-Busting" radio show,” commented Tacy Trump, Executive Producer at VoiceAmerica. Throughout his six-year career, Staley has endured much pain to perform on game day. From a painful hernia that plagued him most of the 1998 season to a Lis Franc sprain (foot) in 2000 that sidelined him for the final 11 games of the year to a shoulder injury early in 2001 that cost him more than two games and caused him to wear a harness the remainder of the season, Staley has kept coming back. With 1,065 rushing yards in 1998 and 1,273 more in '99, Staley became the 3rd Eagles running back to ever register back-to-back 1,000 rushing yard seasons. Duce was voted by his teammates as the team's offensive MVP in 1998 and '99. Some say Duce is back. Dr. Pat says, “Duce never left. His character and big heart have always been right in there supporting his teammates and making contributions toward the greater good of others.”

One of the key Crust-Busting Rules of Engagement is “No Complaining.” Duce has brought new meaning to this Crust-Busting rule. Despite the situation he found himself in this year with the management team, Duce demonstrated nothing but the highest integrity and perseverance. He did not become a victim of his circumstances. Instead, he has emerged as supportive team member and leader.

According to Coach Reid, "Duce has really taken on the leadership of this football team. He could have very easily taken a very selfish approach toward this rotation we have, but it's been just the contrary. He's so supportive of these young guys and is doing a great job here.”

Off the field, Duce has a heart of gold. “It is his passion for his life and the life of others that puts Duce Staley, the Philadelphia Eagles running back, in a class of his own,” commented Dr. Pat Baccili. Duce’s passion for his own life and the life of others is a testament to the way Staley was brought up by his mother and grandmother. Tena Staley kept her son out of trouble growing up in an area prevalent in crime and drugs in West Columbia, South Carolina. She also helped get him through a career-threatening Lis Franc sprain (a midfoot injury) in his right foot in 2000 and a separated shoulder in 2001. Tena is a big reason Staley is so involved in charities such as United Way and the First Steps program in South Carolina and why he spent a portion of his off-season traveling to the Persian Gulf as part of the first USO tour.

How does one demonstrate a passion for the life of others? By taking Crust-Busting action and committing to making the world a better place! The Duce Staley Foundation (DSF) established in December 1999 - funds programs for disadvantaged children through athletics, education and healthcare. Current benefactors include Special Olympics Philadelphia and Columbia, SC, (athletic), Eagles Youth Partnership, FirstSteps Program, SC., (educational) and now the Variety Club, and Direct Care for Kids (healthcare). Fundraisers include the 2nd Annual Duce Staley Foundation Celebrity Bowling Tournament and the Bloomingdale's All-Star Fashion Show. Last season Duce donated $18,000 to the Eagles Youth Partnership through a pledge per offensive touchdowns scored.

In December 1999, Duce Staley presented Governor Jim Hodges of South Carolina with a $25,000 donation to the state's FirstSteps Program, an early childhood education initiative.

Also, in December 1999, Duce Staley was named the Eagles' Player of the Year by Miller Brewing Company. Duce's charity of choice for a $2,500 donation from the Miller Brewing Company was the Otho Davis Foundation, formed in honor of the esteemed Eagles Trainer, the late Otho Davis.

Kicking off the new millennium, Duce Staley served as the spokesperson for the Special Olympics "Sponsor an Athlete Program" and as Chairman of the SPO Celebrity Auction Fundraiser. Staley kicked off the May Games 2000, lighting the torch with Special Olympian, Don Buehler. Duce was honored by the Special Olympics Philadelphia at their Annual Awards Banquet as the "Outstanding Professional Athlete Award for 2000."

Throughout the Philadelphia Eagles 2000 Football season the Duce Staley Foundation has pledged $1,000 to the Eagles Youth Partnership for every game Duce rushes for 100 yards or more and $500 for every offensive touchdown scored.

In honor of his mother Tena Staley, Philadelphia Eagles running back Duce Staley presented the South Carolina Department of Social Services with a contribution of $10,000 that will be used to establish a scholarship fund to promote positive extra curricular activities. The Duce Staley Foundation realizes that children growing up within the Department of Social Services may not have the same benefits and opportunities that other children may take for granted.

Duce Staley believes that all children should be challenged and allowed to cultivate their natural talents as well as discover other options available to them besides television, video games, and the mischief that often comes from boredom or the lack of something to do. The scholarship funds will be available to children ages 5-17 and will be serviced through the South Carolina Department of Social Services.

“Duce is awesome both on and off the field and is a role model for folks like you and me who have a hard time making sense of it all some days,” says Dr. Pat. “He has shown many people what it means to have character and integrity in living live full out.”
